The Prime Minister has delivered his keynote speech to the virtual Conservative Party conference.

His speech centred on the core message that the Covid-19 crisis can be a ‘catalyst for change’ driven by private sector’s ‘rational interest in innovation and competition and market share’, as well as a series of announcements including funding for a greener recovery as reported this morning.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the Government aims “to renew our infrastructure, to spread opportunity more widely and fairly, and to create the conditions for a dynamic recovery that is led not by the state but by free enterprise.”

Other commitments included:

  • A pledge to address the problem of care home funding, using the “magic of averages” to provide security to millions.
  • The announcement that the Government will support first time buyers to take out a long-term fixed-rate mortgages of up to 95% of the value of the home.
  • A promise to continue reforms to the planning system.
